Key takeaways

  • The Moza R9 V3 is listed for PC only. Moza's FAQ says a Moza base can't operate on Xbox without an Xbox-licensed wheel or bundle.
  • Moza says its Xbox-licensed ESX wheel can be used with a Moza base on Xbox, but the ESX page itself recommends the R3 bundle for full console compatibility.
  • The only Moza base in our database listed for Xbox is the R3 Racing Bundle, at 3.9 Nm, less than half the R9's 9 Nm.
  • For Xbox at R9-class torque, the Fanatec CSL DD (8 Nm) with an Xbox-licensed Fanatec rim, or the Logitech RS50 System in its Xbox/PC version, are the direct alternatives.

No, the Moza R9 V3 doesn’t work with Xbox on its own. Moza lists it for PC only, and its FAQ says a Moza base can’t operate on Xbox without an Xbox-licensed wheel or bundle. For Xbox, Moza points to its 3.9 Nm R3 bundle. For R9-class torque, look at the Fanatec CSL DD with an Xbox-licensed rim.

The list above is generated by our compatibility engine from Moza’s own data. Every row that works with the R9 works on PC. The ESX row also lights Xbox, because Moza names that wheel as the way onto Xbox, but no pairing gets a plain pass for Xbox, and nothing works on PlayStation. Here’s why, and what to buy instead if console racing matters to you.

What does Moza say about Xbox?

Moza’s wheel base FAQ is unusually direct. It says Moza wheel bases are officially supported only on Windows PCs, and that simply connecting a Moza base to a console won’t work. It adds that without an Xbox-licensed wheel or bundle, the base itself can’t operate on Xbox consoles.

Then it gives two Xbox routes:

  1. The R3 Racing Bundle, which Moza calls fully compatible with Xbox One and Xbox Series X|S.
  2. The ESX steering wheel, which Moza says can be used with a Moza wheel base to work on Xbox.

PlayStation is a flat no. Moza says its products don’t currently support PS4 or PS5, and there’s no official workaround; we cover that in detail in does Moza work with PS5.

Does the ESX wheel make the R9 work on Xbox?

This is the grey area, and it’s why we don’t mark the R9 as Xbox-compatible. The ESX is Moza’s Xbox-licensed wheel; console licensing lives in the wheel, not the base. Moza’s FAQ says the ESX can be paired with a Moza base on Xbox. But the ESX product page recommends the R3 bundle “or future officially supported bases” for full console compatibility. Read together, that means the R9 isn’t one of the bases Moza officially supports on Xbox today.

The R9’s own spec page lists PC as the platform, so our platform matrix shows “No” in the R9’s Xbox column, and our compatibility checker marks the R9 not compatible on Xbox with any other wheel. With the ESX, the checker returns “Check manufacturer chart” instead: Moza names the ESX as the Xbox route, but doesn’t list the R9 for Xbox. That’s the honest answer until Moza adds the R9 to its supported list.

If you already own an R9 and want to experiment with an ESX, that’s your call. Just don’t buy an R9 expecting Xbox support, because Moza doesn’t promise it.

The Moza base that does support Xbox

The Moza R3 Racing Bundle for Xbox & PC is Moza’s officially supported Xbox option. Per Moza’s R3 bundle page, it includes the R3 base, the 280 mm Xbox-licensed ESX wheel, SR-P Lite pedals and a table clamp, and supports Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Windows 10/11 PCs. It launched at $399.

The trade-offs are significant if you were shopping for an R9:

Moza R9 V3 Moza R3 Racing Bundle
Peak torque 9 Nm 3.9 Nm
Platforms PC PC, Xbox (with the bundled ESX wheel)
Wheel included No Yes, ESX (280 mm)
Pedals included No SR-P Lite (no clutch)
Launch MSRP $349 $399
Pitwall Score 5.7 5.6

On our rubric the two finish almost level: the R3 earns credit for Xbox support, the R9 for torque. But 3.9 Nm is the lowest in Moza’s range, and Moza’s Xbox FAQ notes some buttons and telemetry are unavailable in Xbox mode. It’s a good first wheel for an Xbox owner. It isn’t an R9 replacement for someone who wants strong force feedback.

If you want Xbox support at roughly the R9’s torque, these bases are listed for Xbox in our database. Each comes with a condition, so read the notes. Scores below are each base’s Xbox score, our Xbox profile that ranks hardware once Xbox support is a given.

  • Fanatec CSL DD (8 Nm), Xbox score 6.4: the closest like-for-like swap. It’s 8 Nm direct drive with the Boost Kit 180 included, has pedal, shifter and handbrake ports, and takes bottom or desk-clamp mounting. Xbox requires an Xbox-licensed Fanatec wheel such as the CSL Steering Wheel GT3. It doesn’t work on PlayStation.
  • Logitech G RS50 System, Xbox score 6.7: 8 Nm with TRUEFORCE, sold pre-assembled with the RS Wheel Hub and Round Wheel plus a table clamp. Buy the Xbox/PC version; it’s also sold as PC-only and PS/PC.
  • Fanatec ClubSport DD, Xbox score 7.3: a step up to 15 Nm with a full QR2 base-side, for Xbox and PC with an Xbox-licensed Fanatec wheel. Its table clamp is sold separately, and it wants a rigid rig.
  • Logitech G PRO Racing Wheel, Xbox score 7.1: 11 Nm with its PRO wheel included, sold in an Xbox/PC version. It launched at $999.99.

Thrustmaster also lists a separate Xbox/PC version of the T598, which our database records only as a note on the PlayStation/PC model; does the Thrustmaster T598 work with Xbox explains how to tell the two boxes apart.

Which should you buy?

Keep or buy the R9 if you race on PC. It’s a 9 Nm base with a 21-bit encoder and ports for pedals, shifter, handbrake, dash and E-stop, and every current Moza wheel fits it.

Buy the Fanatec CSL DD (8 Nm) plus an Xbox-licensed Fanatec rim if you want Xbox and PC with R9-level torque and a rim ecosystem you can grow into.

Buy the Logitech RS50 System (Xbox/PC) if you want one box that works on Xbox out of the box.

Buy the Moza R3 bundle only if you’re new to sim racing, want to stay in Moza’s ecosystem, and can live with 3.9 Nm.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use a Moza R9 on Xbox Series X?

Not by itself. Moza states its wheel bases are officially supported only on Windows PCs and that the base alone can't operate on Xbox. Moza's workaround is its Xbox-licensed ESX wheel, which isn't fully supported on the R9 per the ESX page.

Does the Moza R9 work on PS5?

No. Moza states its products don't currently support PS4 or PS5, and there's no official workaround.

Which Moza wheel base works with Xbox?

The Moza R3 Racing Bundle for Xbox and PC. It includes the 3.9 Nm R3 base, the Xbox-licensed ESX wheel, SR-P Lite pedals and a table clamp. Some buttons and telemetry are unavailable in Xbox mode, per Moza.

What's the best Xbox alternative to the Moza R9?

The Fanatec CSL DD (8 Nm) is the closest match: 8 Nm direct drive with a pedal port, and Xbox support with an Xbox-licensed Fanatec wheel such as the CSL Steering Wheel GT3.

Will an adapter make the R9 work on Xbox?

Moza lists no adapter route. The only path it describes is the Xbox-licensed ESX wheel. Our compatibility checker marks the ESX on the R9 on Xbox 'Check manufacturer chart', because Moza's FAQ names that route but the R9's own page lists PC only.
