How we score cockpits

Every cockpit, rig and stand is scored on five published specs: frame type (weight 3), the manufacturer’s rated wheelbase torque (2, scaled from 5 Nm to 30 Nm), wheel mounting options (1), whether a seat is included (1) and whether a monitor mount is included (0.5). Frame type maps aluminum profile to 1.0, tube frame to 0.6, wheel stand to 0.4 and foldable to 0.3. The details are on how we evaluate.

One thing to know before you read the list: only seven of the 24 cockpits publish a torque rating. None of the top five aluminum rigs does, so our compatibility checker marks bases above 10 Nm on an unrated frame as “check manufacturer chart” rather than compatible.

Trak Racer's 160 x 40 mm aluminium profile cockpit with 120 x 40 mm wheel uprights, seat slider rails and multiple wheelbase mounting options. It suits high-torque direct drive setups and expands with over 30 add-ons.

Strengths

  • 160 x 40 mm base profile with 120 x 40 mm wheel supports
  • Wheel plate, Fanatec DD side mount, universal front mount and Asetek front mount options
  • Seat slider rails and adjustment bar included

Watch out for

  • Seat and monitor stand not included
  • Trak Racer's chart gives an open-ended 0 to 30 Nm+ range rather than a maximum

Five aluminum rigs tie at 6.7: the TR160 V5, TR120S V2, GT Omega PRIME, Sim-Lab GT1 Pro and Sim-Lab P1X Pro. All five have front and bottom mounting, and none includes a seat or monitor mount. We pick the TR160 V5 because it lists the widest set of wheelbase mounts: a wheel plate, a Fanatec DD side mount, a universal front mount and an Asetek front mount. Its 160 x 40 mm base profile matches the largest in the tie.

The wheel supports use 120 x 40 mm profile, and seat slider rails and an adjustment bar are included. It weighs 41 kg. The seat and monitor stand are extra. Trak Racer’s chart gives an open-ended 0 to 30 Nm+ torque range rather than a maximum, so high-torque bases show “check” on its compatibility panel.

A round-tube cockpit built on a 50 mm steel tube frame with mid-frame bracing, adjustable wheel and pedal plates and Formula/GT positions. Next Level Racing rates it for direct drive wheels up to 25 Nm.

Strengths

  • Ø50 mm tubular steel frame with reinforced mid-frame bracing
  • Rated for direct drive wheels up to 25 Nm
  • Integrated seat slider and adjustable wheel and pedal plates

Watch out for

  • Monitor mount is an optional add-on
  • Heavy at 49.5 kg

The F-GT Pro and Trak Racer TR5 tie at 5.9, the top score among tube frames and among cockpits that publish a wheelbase torque rating. Both are rated to 25 Nm with a seat included. We pick the F-GT Pro because its frame is fully specified: a Ø50 mm tubular steel frame with reinforced mid-frame bracing, plus an integrated seat slider and adjustable wheel and pedal plates. Trak Racer notes some wheelbases need an optional bracket on the TR5.

That 25 Nm rating clears 24 of our 29 bases outright. Our checker marks the 27 Nm Asetek Invicta, 28 Nm Simagic Alpha EVO Ultra and 35 Nm Simucube 3 Ultimate as over the rating. The front-only Simucube 2 Pro can’t mount to its wheel plate either. The monitor mount is optional, and the rig weighs 49.5 kg.

Playseat's F1-position cockpit with a carbon steel and anodised aluminium frame, pre-drilled wheel and pedal base plates and an integrated monitor mount. It suits single-seater fans running direct drive wheels.

Strengths

  • Integrated monitor mount (VESA 50x50 to 200x100)
  • Pre-drilled, adaptable base plates for wheel and pedals
  • Adjustable seating for Formula and LMP-style positions

Watch out for

  • Not foldable and weighs 50 kg
  • Playseat does not publish a torque rating
  • Max recommended driver weight is 120 kg

The Formula Intelligence (5.7) is the only cockpit we track that includes a monitor mount, and it includes a seat too. The integrated mount takes VESA 50x50 to 200x100. The base plates are pre-drilled and adaptable for wheel and pedals, and the seating adjusts for Formula and LMP-style positions.

It’s not foldable, it weighs 50 kg, and Playseat doesn’t publish a torque rating, so treat high-torque bases as unconfirmed. The maximum recommended driver weight is 120 kg. It suits a low, feet-up driving position. If you want a GT-style tube rig with a known 25 Nm rating, the F-GT Pro above is the better match.

A foldable carbon steel wheel stand with wheel and pedal plates, a shifter arm and a chair cradle for use with your own chair. It can be upgraded to a full cockpit with the GTSeat Add-On, suiting players starting without a dedicated seat.

Strengths

  • Wheel plate and pedal plate with height and angle adjustment
  • Shifter and handbrake support mountable left or right
  • Folds for storage; upgradeable to a cockpit with the GTSeat Add-On

Watch out for

  • No seat included; uses your own chair
  • Next Level Racing does not publish a torque rating

The Wheel Stand 2.0 and GT Omega APEX tie at 2.9. We pick the Wheel Stand 2.0 because it has an upgrade path: Next Level Racing’s GTSeat Add-On turns it into a cockpit. It has height- and angle-adjustable wheel and pedal plates, shifter and handbrake support mountable left or right, and it folds for storage.

It uses your own chair and has no published torque rating. Stands score lowest on our rubric by design, because they flex more than full frames.

Aluminum profile vs tube frame

Ten of our 24 cockpits are aluminum profile, eight are tube frames, three are foldables and three are wheel stands. Here’s how aluminum compares with the tube and foldable rigs on published data:

Aluminum profile (10) Tube frame and foldable (11)
Rubric frame score 1.0 0.6 (foldables 0.3)
Front mounting listed 7 of 10 1 (Alpine TRX V2)
Seat included 0 7
Published torque rating 1 (TR80S, 16 Nm) 5 (25 Nm x3, 13 Nm x2)
Published weights 32 to 60.1 kg 11.6 to 89 kg

Aluminum profile, often called 8020 after the extrusion standard, is a set of T-slot rails you bolt together. Anything clamps anywhere along a slot, so the wheel deck, pedals, seat and screens adjust independently and stay rigid. Our rubric scores it highest because that rigidity is what stops a direct drive base from flexing the frame. Profile size matters too. The rigs here run from 80 x 40 mm (TR80S, GTElite) to 160 x 40 mm (TR160 V5, PRIME, F-GT Elite 160). Our best 8020 sim rig ranking covers profile sizes in depth.

Tube frames trade adjustability for completeness. Every cockpit in our database that includes a seat is tube or foldable, and the only rigs publishing a 25 Nm rating are tubes. Don’t assume tubes are lighter. Trak Racer’s Alpine TRX V2 weighs 89 kg, the heaviest frame we track.

Front mount, bottom mount and seat options

Front vs bottom mount

Eight cockpits list front mounting: the PRIME, GT1 Pro, P1X Pro, TR120S V2, TR160 V5 and Alpine TRX V2 offer both, and the two Next Level Racing Front & Side Mount editions are front only. The other 16 are bottom mount (wheel plate) only.

That decides which bases you can use:

  • Front-only bases: the Simucube 2 Pro mounts by a front flange (four M8 holes on a 145 mm pattern), so our checker rules out every bottom-only frame for it.
  • Front-only cockpits: on the F-GT Elite 160 and GTElite Front & Side Mount, bases that only list bottom mounting or a desk clamp need confirming with the manufacturer.
  • Front-mount restrictions on bases: Simagic warns that front brackets disable the Alpha EVO family’s magnetic wheel connection, and Fanatec says the CSL DD’s front inserts aren’t for cockpit front-mounting. A front-mount rig doesn’t help those bases.

Bottom mounting is the universal option. Every base we track except the Simucube 2 Pro and the desk-clamp-only Thrustmaster T598 lists it.

Torque ratings and high-torque bases

Match the frame’s rating to your base’s peak. Here’s what the published ratings clear in our checker:

Rating Cockpits Bases cleared
25 Nm F-GT Pro, TR5, TR8 PRO V2 24 of 29; not the Invicta, Alpha EVO Ultra, Simucube 3 Ultimate or front-only Simucube 2 Pro
16 Nm TR80S 17 of 29, up to the MOZA R16 Ultra
13 Nm GTLite Pro, RC F 14 of 29, up to the 12 Nm bases
5 Nm FS3 V2 The 3.9 Nm MOZA R3 and the 5 Nm Fanatec CSL DD

For the 27 Nm Asetek Invicta, 28 Nm Alpha EVO Ultra or 35 Nm Simucube 3 Ultimate, no cockpit in our database publishes a rating high enough. The front-mount aluminum rigs are the natural home, but confirm with the maker. Trak Racer’s 0 to 30 Nm+ chart covers the TR120S V2, TR160 V5 and Alpine TRX V2. Our how much torque do you need guide explains what each torque band demands of a frame.

Seats and monitor mounts

Seven cockpits include a seat: the NLR F-GT Pro, GTtrack, GTLite Pro and RC F, the Playseat Challenge X and Formula Intelligence, and the Trak Racer TR5. On aluminum rigs, the seat is always extra. Some include the hardware for one, like seat slider rails on the TR120S V2 and TR160 V5, or seat brackets on the Next Level Racing GTElite and F-GT Elite.

Only the Playseat Formula Intelligence includes a monitor mount. Sim-Lab offers optional integrated Vario monitor mounts (single or triple) for the GT1 Evo and GT1 Pro. Trak Racer offers optional stands, including an integrated single-display stand up to 70 inches on the Alpine TRX V2.

Before you order, put your base and cockpit into the compatibility checker to confirm mounting and torque. Browse all frames on the cockpits hub, and pick a base from our best sim racing wheels ranking.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best sim racing cockpit?

Five aluminum profile rigs tie for our top score of 6.7. We pick the Trak Racer TR160 V5, which has a 160 x 40 mm base profile, wheel plate, Fanatec DD side mount, universal front mount and Asetek front mount options, and seat slider rails in the box.

Is an aluminum profile rig better than a tube frame?

For direct drive, our rubric favours aluminum profile: it scores 1.0 on frame type against 0.6 for tube frames, because extrusion rigs resist flex and adjust in every direction. Tube rigs often include a seat and some publish a 25 Nm rating, which suits most bases.

Can a sim racing cockpit handle a 25 Nm wheel base?

Tube rigs such as the Next Level Racing F-GT Pro, Trak Racer TR5 and TR8 Pro V2 are rated for bases up to 25 Nm. The top aluminum rigs don't publish a maximum; Trak Racer's chart gives an open-ended 0 to 30 Nm+ range for the TR120S V2 and TR160 V5.

Do sim racing cockpits come with a seat?

Seven of the 24 we track do: the Next Level Racing F-GT Pro, GTtrack, GTLite Pro and RC F, the Playseat Challenge X and Formula Intelligence, and the Trak Racer TR5. Most aluminum profile rigs sell the seat separately.

What's the difference between front mount and bottom mount?

Bottom mount bolts the base down onto a wheel plate; front mount bolts its face to a bracket on the rig's uprights. Front mounting suits high-torque bases, and a few, like the Simucube 2 Pro, only mount from the front.
